Some wedding days feel special because of the setting, and others feel special because of the people, but Mara and Ryan somehow had both. Their Rainier Chapter House wedding in Seattle was full of history, huge emotion, thoughtful details, and the kind of joy that seemed to fill every corner of the room. They built the day around being present with each other and the people they love, which gave everything a really natural, lived-in feeling!

A Love Story That Started on Opposite Sides of the Country

Mara and Ryan met while working together from opposite sides of the country, connected over shared interests, and quickly became the kind of couple everyone else could see coming before they fully admitted it themselves. Ryan eventually booked a trip to Seattle so they could meet in person, and within a few months, he packed up his life and moved across the country to pursue the relationship.

Then COVID arrived almost immediately (which feels like a pretty intense way to test a brand-new relationship!), but they made it through together. By the time they were planning their wedding, they had already built a life rooted in shared passions, deep connection, and the kind of commitment that makes everything else feel easy by comparison.

When the Venue Feels Meant for You

Mara and Ryan’s lives both revolve around history, so Rainier Chapter House felt almost suspiciously perfect. Not only does the venue sit in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, where Mara grew up, it is also directly tied to the Daughters of the American Revolution, which resonates with Ryan’s background in  Revolutionary War history.

There were so many little overlaps between the venue and their own stories that from their first venue walk, the choice felt fated. They cared about how the wedding looked, of course, but even more about what every part of the day meant to them, which made the entire celebration feel connected from beginning to end!

A First Look Full of Joy

Their day began with details and getting ready before moving into their first look, and the smiles basically didn’t stop from there. Mara and Ryan are both naturally expressive around each other, and once they were together, the energy shifted immediately into pure excitement.

We moved through individual portraits, wedding-party photos, and family formals before the ceremony, but nothing ever felt crammed. Because they had built enough space into the timeline, they were able to stay present instead of rushing from one photo opportunity to the next, and that gave us room to play around.

The Vintage Car Adventure + Mara’s Regal Portrait Moment

After the ceremony and cocktail hour, we headed out in a vintage car for portraits at the park, which gave us a completely different visual chapter in the middle of the day. Splitting portraits into different windows let us work with changing light, a wide variety of locations, and different energy without turning the wedding into one long photo block.

Before the wedding, Mara mentioned wanting an epic seated portrait, so we absolutely had to make that happen. The final image feels regal, confident, and completely her, with just enough drama to make it memorable without feeling disconnected from the rest of the gallery.

During our vintage-car adventure, I also mentioned how much I love a good couch portrait and referenced one from my website that gets a lot of attention. Mara and Ryan told me that exact image had actually been one of the major reasons they booked me, which made creating their own version extra fun. Thankfully, we all understood the assignment.

A Wedding Day Built Around Presence

One of the things I loved most about Mara and Ryan’s wedding was how intentionally they made space to actually experience it. Their timeline included all of the big moments, but it also included a private reception reveal, time with guests, and a quiet moment together before their grand entrance.

That kind of breathing room completely changes the feeling of the day. It gives couples a chance to look around, take everything in, and remember that they’re in the middle of something huge, which naturally leads to more meaningful photographs because the emotion is already there.

The Kind of Joy You Can Feel in Every Frame

By the time the reception was fully underway, the energy in Rainier Chapter House was incredible. There were toasts, cake, signature dances, and eventually a packed dance floor full of people who were very ready to celebrate these two.

That’s what stands out most when I look back through their gallery. The beautiful portraits and thoughtful details matter, but the real heart of the story is the way they kept choosing to be present with each other and everyone around them. You can feel how much they love each other, and that feeling carries through the entire day.
